Book reviews

"Small is beautiful" (E.F. Schumacher, 1973)

This is a review of the 1993 edition, which I bought second hand. I mention this specifically because I found SO MANY TYPOS IN THE BOOK. But maybe they have been fixed in later editions. At points they were a bit distracting.

But to the book itself: full of interesting ideas. Starting by the notion that earth resources are not infinite: way ahead of its time, I feel. We're just recently started to hear that drum loudly, whereas I think we should have paid heed to that notion much earlier.

Also in respect to work and what people want to do with their lives. What dignifies vs dehumanizes? Reminded me a bit to the notion of bullshit jobs. I also wondered what he'd make out of 'the gig economy' where workers have very little agency over their work, very little pride, very little protections.

That said, I guess it's also a product of its time, but the book is written in such a male way. It's all about "man does this", "man does that", "mankind"... It felt a little bit exclusionary. As if women weren't part of this.
